Maharashtra polls: Farhan & Zoya Akhtar cast votes, encourage voter turnout
The Maharashtra Assembly elections are being held in a single phase today, with over 4,000 candidates contesting across 288 constituencies.
Bollywood songwriter Javed Akhtar has sparked a debate by opposing the use of loudspeakers in mosques. Last year, singer Sonu Nigam faced a backlash for voicing his opinion on the same issue.
Sonu Nigam had raised objection against Azaan in one of his tweets, calling it ‘forced religiousness’. This action led the people to slam him on the social media and religious groups. Thereafter, Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi of the West Bengal Minority Council issued a fatwa against the Sonu Nigam, claiming “whosoever gets the singer bald will receive a reward of Rs 10 lakh.”
Earlier today, lyricist Javed Akhtar took to Twitter and shared his opinion. The tweet reads, “This is to put on record that I totally agree with all those including Sonu Nigam who want that loudspeakers should not be used by the mosques and for that matter by any place of worship in residential areas (sic).”

Twitterati called out for Javed Akhtar to which he replied with another tweet, saying “Maen har galat baat Kay Khilaf awaaz uthata hoon . Mushkil yehi hai ke aap dusron ki galti to maan saktay hain Magar apni nahin (I have raised a voice against all wrong practices. The problem is that you can recognize others’ mistakes, but not your own.”
