The Central Government has appointed Professor Errol D’Souza as the director of Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A). Executive chairman of the Murugappa Group, AV Vellayan, will assume charge as the chairman of the Board of Governors (BoG) at IIM-Kozhikode.
According to Indian Express, the decision comes just hours before the new law on appointment of directors to IIMs came into force.
According to the IIM Act, which came into force on Wednesday, 31 January, the premier management institutions will henceforth have the right to appoint heads of the institute and the BoG on their own.
Thus the appointments of Professor D’Souza and Vellayan are the last done by the government.
Professor D’Souza has been appointed to the post for five years, the order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training said.
He is at present the director in-charge and dean (faculty) at the institution.
Before joining IIM-A in 2001, D’Souza was the IFCI chair professor in the department of economics, University of Mumbai and was also a visiting scholar at Columbia University, New York, and a visiting senior fellow at the Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore.
He has worked on academic committees of the University Grants Commission and the Indian Council of Social Science Research, and has been associated with the Planning Commission and the Reserve Bank of India.
The IIM Act provides full autonomy to IIMs and allows them to grant degrees.
