Puthenveetil Sreejeev died on 21 March 2014, allegedly in police custody.

Demanding a CBI probe into the death, his brother Puthenveetil Sreejith has been staging a sit-in outside the Kerala Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram for the past 765 days.

A CBI probe has now been ordered. Sreejith and his mother Remani, however, said that they will continue their protest till the CBI begins the probe.

According to reports, the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, his private secretary MV Jayarajan and CPI(M) leader and former MLA V Sivankutty met Sreejith at the protest venue.

The family claims that Sreejeev was tortured by the police in custody leading to his death at the hospital. The man was around 27 at the time. The accused cops claim that Sreejeev, who was picked up on charges of theft, consumed poison while being taken into custody.

Hundreds extended their support to Sreejith. Online campaigns were run under the hashtag #justiceforsreejith and some Malayalam cine stars, too, expressed their support.

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) was in power at the time of Sreejev’s death.
