Deluge, stampede, blaze: Why ‘29’ spelled doom to Mumbai in 2017

Mumbai was rocked by three tragedies in 2017 – a deluge, a stampede and a blaze — all on the 29^th day of three different months.

It started on August 29 when torrential rain brought the India’s financial capital to its knees, disrupting rail, road and air services, uprooting trees and leaving hundreds of Mumbaikars stranded. At least 10 people were killed.

A month later, on September 29, a stampede on a bridge linking the Elphinstone Road and Parel stations killed 23 people.

In the wee hours of 29 December, tragedy struck again when a fire broke out at a pub in the Kamala Mills compound of Lower Parel area, where a birthday party was being hosted.

The blaze killed 14 people, including 11 women, and injured 21.
