Opposing the proposed Metro trains fare hike in Delhi, the AAP government on Wednesday introduced a resolution in the Delhi Assembly, urging the Centre to intervene so that the Metro fare hike is reversed in the interest of common people.
The special session of the Delhi Assembly was also extended for one more day to discuss and pass the resolution on the matter.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have been at loggerheads over the proposed Metro fare hike which is set to come into force from 10 October.
The consideration and adoption of this resolution would take place on 9 October in the course of which the AAP legislators are likely to corner the DMRC and the BJP-ruled Centre on the issue.
Metro rides are set to become more expensive as its trains’ fares are going to be hiked by a maximum amount of Rs 10 from 10 October. This is the second time this year that these fares are going to be increases. The last Metro fare hike was effected in May when the minimum fare went up from Rs 8 to Rs 10 and the maximum from Rs 30 to Rs 50.
Tabling a resolution in the House on Wednesday, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said that the proposed Metro fare hike is an “insensitive approach”, urging the Union Urban Development Ministry to “actively and quickly intervene”.
Gahlot said the proposed Metro fare hike would be another burden on people who have  already been suffering from the consequences of demonetisation, Goods and Services Tax (GST), and sustained fuel price hike.
