In a move aimed at boosting the efficiency of police in the city, Gurgaon police has decided to conduct written examination for cops eligible for the post of station house officers (SHOs).
Gurgaon Police Commissioner Sandeep Khirwar told The Statesman that the test is to identify efficient and deserving cops. "Earlier the postings of SHOs were on the basis of seniority. Through this test we will be able to recognise the caliber and potential in cops and give them postings accordingly. There would be no seniority in this test, cops who score well will be considered deserving candidates,” said Khirwar.
“Question paper is not yet finalised. Most probably the exam will be of 100 marks and questions related to knowledge of women-related laws, correct filing of charge sheets, accused and witness rights, cyber tracking, knowledge of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), decision-making in hypothetical situations and research on city’s wanted criminals will be put to check the parameters of the cops. We have also planned to ask cops to review a case study,” said Khirwar.

According to a police official, many policemen in Gurgaon remain posted in one police station for almost a decade. “In view of their seniority they get promoted as SHOs. Some deserving cops are left behind due to this seniority rule. This will motivate them to work more and gain knowledge,” said a police official.
“Priority would be given to cops who perform well in areas such as women-related crimes, gang rivalries or robberies or cyber tracking. They will be given positions according to their abilities. There would also be an overall review of the selected cop. We will see the cases handled and cracked by them,” said Khirwar.
