Mike Pompeo meets Imran Khan, discusses Pak’s role in Afghan peace process, counter-terrorism

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday met Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and emphasized on the significant role of Pakistan in the Afghan peace process and counter-terrorism.

Morgan Ortagus, State Department Spokesperson said, “Secretary Pompeo emphasised the continued importance of the United States and Pakistan working together to advance shared priorities, including Pakistan’s significant role in supporting the Afghan peace process and counter-terrorism”.

Ortagus further said, “The Secretary looked forward to continued progress from Pakistan on shared security priorities, including defeating terrorist organisations, which he hoped would form the basis of a reinvigorated partnership”.

In a series of tweets, PM Imran Khan on Tuesday said, “I want to assure President Trump Pakistan will do everything within its power to facilitate the Afghan peace process. The world owes it to the long-suffering Afghan people to bring about peace after 4 decades of conflict”.

After Pompeo’s meeting with his counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said in a statement that “discussions on bilateral, regional and international issues” took place in the meeting that lasted for about 40 minutes.

PM Imran Khan had earlier discussed opportunities for enhanced cooperation, including expanded trade and investment avenues with Pompeo.
