Venezuela’s former military intelligence chief went missing in Spain just days after a court approved a request for his extradition to the US on drug trafficking charges, according to police on Wednesday.
A spokeswoman for Spain’s national police said while referring to General Hugo Armando Carvajal, “They are currently looking for him”.
On Friday, the Criminal Chamber of the Spanish National Court ruled to extradite Carvajal.
In April, the former general was arrested by Spanish police at the request of US authorities, but Spain’s High Court then ruled in September that he should be released and his extradition request denied.
Carvajal, an ally of Venezuela’s late Socialist leader Hugo Chavez, is wanted by US authorities for alleged drug trafficking.
He has previously denied accusations that he collaborated with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia to help smuggle cocaine into the United States.
Earlier, the US had asked Spain to extradite the former intelligence chief, claiming that he had allegedly cooperated with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) to smuggle cocaine into the US.
