9 killed in powerful explosion outside Kabul University, many injured

At least nine people were killed and many injured after a blast hit the south gate of Kabul University in the Afghan capital of Kabul on Friday, according to officials.

Health ministry spokesman Wahid Mayar said that two bodies and 10 injured people had been taken to hospital after the blast.

No militant group has claimed responsibility yet.

Kabul Police chief spokesman Ferdous Faramarz said that two vehicles are ablaze following Friday’s early morning explosion. It was not clear if the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber or remotely detonated. The university compound houses several hostels where many students stay over the summer, attending classes and conducting research. The university is co-educational”.

“A police team defused a second bomb that was placed close to the explosion site near a university gate”, he further said.

A student at the university campus said the explosion happened when a number of students were waiting near the campus gate to attend an exam.

One of the eyewitnesses said that a vehicle caught fire after the explosion.
