Chelsea have been handed a major injury boost with Blues midfielder Cesc Fabregas finally back to training with the ball after being sidelined for the past few weeks with a mystery knee issue.

Fabregas, who was left out of the 23-man Spanish squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, had a solid pre-season under new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri but was struck by a peculiar knee injury just before the 2018/19 season got underway.

Sarri assured fans that the injury wasn’t serious and he expected the player to return to training in a couple of weeks, but added it was a painful and strange one.

So far, Fabregas has missed all four of Chelsea’s games and while the Blues haven’t really missed him to be honest, the 31-year-old is a good option nonetheless.

Here’s a video of him being put through his paces by club coaches:

The summer arrivals of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic have intensified the competition for a starting spot in Sarri’s 4-3-3 system.

N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are, arguably, undroppable at the moment and the  likes of Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley and Fabregas will  jostle it out to make the last spot in the three-man midfield.

Of course, Fabregas can play further up field alongside Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata but it is unlikely Sarri will field a slow player on the wing when he can call upon the likes of Pedro and Willian.

The Blues are level on points with leaders Liverpool and surprise package Watford after four wins from as many games and will next be seen in action when they host Cardiff City on September 15.

Most of Fabregas’ teammates are away on national team duty at the moment and will return to West London next week.
