Former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni finally revealed the reason behind his decision to step down as Indian cricket team’s captain. MS Dhoni is among the most successful skippers India has ever had. He had stepped down from his position in the national team in 2017 and passed on the baton to current skipper Virat Kohli.
Speaking at a motivational event conducted by the Central Industrial Security Force at the Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi, MS Dhoni finally explained his reasons.
“I resigned from captaincy because I wanted the new captain (Virat Kohli) to get enough time for preparing a team before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019,” MS Dhoni said.
The 37-year-old wicket-keeper batsman also backed his own decision of giving up captaincy at the right time.
“Selecting a strong team without giving the new captain appropriate time isn’t possible. I believe that I left the captaincy at the right time,” said the Chennai Super Kings captain.
MS Dhoni also said Virat Kohli and and team should have played practice matches before the start of the Test series against England.
“Indian team missed out on playing practices matches before the series, which is why the batsmen are finding it difficult to adjust. This is a part of game. We shouldn’t forget that India is currently No. 1 in the rankings,” the World Cup winning captain added.
