India’s bowling spearhead Mohammed Shami’s estranged wife, Haseen Jahan, was taken into police custody on late Sunday night at Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha after she reached Shami’s house and created a commotion.

As per reports, the police arrested Jahan under section 151 which says that the police can arrest a person without a warrant for 24 hours. She was later released on bail.

Jahan had, on Sunday night, gone to Shami’s house in Sahaspur Ali Nagar Village with her daughter. When her in-laws asked her to leave she locked herself and her daughter in a room. Sensing trouble, her in-laws called the police who unsuccessfully tried to settle the issue. Subsequently, Jahan was taken into custody.

“I have come to my husband’s house and I have every right to stay here. My in-laws are misbehaving with me and the police is supporting them. They should have arrested them but they are taking me to the police station,” said Jahan while talking to the media.

Shami was, in March, charged with domestic violence and sexual harassment by the police on the basis of Jahan’s complaint. A charge sheet was filed under section 498A (domestic violence) and 354A (Sexual harassment).

Shami’s name, on Saturday, was recommended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the prestigious Arjuna Award. He is also included in the 15-man India World Cup squad that will play the ICC World Cup starting on May 30 in England.

Currently, Shami is playing in the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Kings XI Punjab.
