Karnataka captain and India cricketer Mayank Agarwal, who was rushed to a hospital in Agartala after he experienced vommiting and discomfort in a New Delhi-bound flight on Tuesday, is “stable and is currently under observation.”
Almost a day after spending in the hospital, Agarwal himself took to social media to share a medical update, saying he’s feeling better.
Hospital sources in Agartala also confirmed that the top order batter is not in any kind of danger and is currently under observation in the hospital.
It was learnt that Mayank fell ill after consuming liquid from a pouch, which he thought was water and was kept on his seat as he was on board with IndiGo Airlines. That led to him having swelling and ulcers in his mouth.
Sharing two photographs of himself lying on a hospital bed, Agarwal posted with a caption: “I am feeling better now. Gearing to comeback. Thank you for prayers, love and support, everyone!”
Agarwal, who has played 21 Tests for India, had led Karnataka to a 29-run victory over Tripura on Monday and was scheduled to fly to Gujarat for his side’s next Ranji Trophy match against Railways in Surat.
However, in present condition, the opener has justifiably been ruled out of the game; instead, Mayank will be flown to Bengaluru for further treatment.
In his absence, vice-captain Nikin Jose is likely to take over the Karnataka team’s captaincy in the next match, starting February 2. While it is not yet ascertained what was in the pouch, Agarwal’s team has reportedly lodged a formal complaint with the police, who are now investigating the matter.
The airline has also issued a press release to address the incident. “IndiGo flight 6E 5177 operating from Agartala to Delhi returned to origin due to a medical emergency onboard. The passenger was off-loaded and was rushed to the hospital for further medical assistance. The aircraft took off again for its destination at 1620h,” it read.
