According to the latest reports, Alex McCarthy, the Southampton goalkeeper, is one of the favourites to replace Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet as the latter is all set to leave the club this summer.
It is to be noted that Mignolet joined the Reds in 2013 and has served the club for six back to back seasons and has now finally decided to move to Club Brugge KV on a five-year contract. This means that Liverpool will get an estimated amount of €9million as fees for this transfer.
Now, as per a report carried by Evening Standard, a London based newspaper, the Champions League winner Liverpool team is looking for a goalkeeper and it is Alex McCarthy who is the prime contender among all goalkeepers who are being considered.
In the month of June, Evening Standard had stated that McCarthy is in fact “open to entertaining long-standing Liverpool interest this summer should all the pieces for a switch to Anfield fall into place.”
McCarthy made his International debut in November 2018 when he donned the England colours against the USA in a friendly match.
It is worth noting that if a deal between Liverpool and McCarthy materialises, then McCarthy would become the seventh player since 2014 who would have made a transfer from Southampton to Liverpool.
Prior to McCarthy’s expected transfer, Virgil van Dijk had moved to Liverpool for a record fee of £75million and had a brilliant season with Liverpool.
