In a big relief for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), its captain Shreyas Iyer is set to play in the Indian Premier League 2024 but with caution.

Iyer has been advised not to stretch while playing forward defense, as this could increase his injury. Earlier, during the Ranji Trophy 2023/24 finals game against Vidarbha, Iyer missed the last two days, citing a back issue.

According to some media reports, after consultation with the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bangalore, the 29-year-old visited the spine specialist in Mumbai, who advised the right-hand batsmen not to stretch much during forward defense as this can increase the injury.

Since his injuries during Mumbai’s 2023–24 Ranji Trophy victory, Iyer has been in the news. The KKR captain was also forced to miss the quarterfinal match against Baroda due to this injury.

Iyer took part in the intrasquad practice match on Sunday at Eden Gardens, when he was stumped out by Englishman Philip Salt after managing just 22 off 19 balls.

Due to an injury, the Indian batsman missed the entire 2023 Indian Premier League season. Nitish Rana assumed leadership of the KKR team.

Iyer signed for Rs 2.6 crore with the Delhi Daredevils (now the Delhi Capitals) in 2015, making his IPL debut. In the 2022 IPL auctions, KKR acquired the batsmen for a whopping Rs 12.26 crore .

The Mumbai-based batter has played in 101 IPL games to date, amassing 2,776 runs at a strike rate of 125.38 and an average of 31.55.
