Cricket is like a religion in India where people not just follow the game, but treat the cricketing heroes as demi gods.
After thrashing Sri Lanka, the Indian team were high on confidence when they landed in South Africa on 28 December for three-match Test series. People were expecting Virat Kohli’s side to be the first to win a Test series in South Africa. But with the way first Test match is going on, it seems winning a series in the longest format of game in Africa is just a distant dream.
Meanwhile, if media reports are to be believed, one of the fans of Captain Kohli tried to kill himself after his hero failed to perform with the bat in the first innings of the first Test, getting out on 5 runs to a Morne Morkel’s delivery.
The fan from Delhi lad was so upset with Kohli’s performance that he tried to commit suicide by burning himself. As per reports in News18, the fan was has been identified as Babubal Bairva and he is a retired railway employee. He was alone in his home watching the match when his favourite cricketer got out and he allegedly poured kerosene on himself and attempted to kill himself.
Meanwhile talking to DNA, Do Batti Police Station Assistant Sub Inspector PS Alawa said, “The man in his statement accepted that he was too upset with the dismissal of Virat Kohli and set himself ablaze. During the probe, we found no other reason which could have driven Bairva to take this extreme step.”
