Harry Kane ended his 2017 on a stellar note, breaking Alan Shearer’s 22-year-old Premier League record of most goals in a calendar year and overtaking Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi for most goals in 2017, but the Tottenham Hotspur frontman is targeting more goals in 2018.
“A lot of the build-up was about Alan Shearer’s record and if I could break it but I was calm, I was confident and when you have players like Christian Eriksen putting in crosses like that (for the first goal) as a striker, it’s a dream” Kane told SpursTV after Tottenham’s 5-2 win over Southampton on Tuesday.

Needing only a goal to better Shearer’s tally of 36, the 24-year-old registered a first-half brace to shatter the record the Newcastle United legend set in 1995 before completing his hat-trick in the second-half for good measure.
“It’s amazing. Keano (Robbie Keane)…I grew up watching him play and scoring goals. Teddy (Sheringham) the same. To be up there with those names is something I’m very proud of and you know what I’m like – I want to continue it and hope 2018 is even better.”

With the treble, Kane also overtook Lionel Messi for most goals in 2017, ending the year with 56 goals for club and country, two ahead of the Barcelona and Argentina forward.
“We were on it right from the start, similar to Burnley,” the English striker gushed as he added, “It was important to finish the year strongly and we’ve done that so hopefully 2018 will be even better. We’ve got to keep improving, keep getting better and wins like this will always help us. We’ll go into another busy period full of confidence”.
