Firesale at Liverpool? Jurgen Klopp responds to speculation

After spending over €200 million in the calendar year, Liverpool have a squad that is overflowing, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted, but he remains defiant that there will be no firesale in August just to cut the wage bill down.

“We will see what happens. If any player from my team is available, then in every other situation in my life as a manager I would have bought all of them, to be honest. They are all fantastic boys, they are able to play fantastic football,” Klopp told his post-match press conference after Liverpool’s thumping win in Dublin, Ireland.

So far, Fabinho (€45 million), Naby Keita (€60 million), Xherdan Shaqiri (€15 million) and Alisson (€62.5 million) have arrived in the summer transfer window while Virgil van Dijk (€79 million) was acquired in the January window.

Even if one factors in the sale of Philippe Coutinho for a mammoth figure of €125 million, the Reds have a squad that is quite literally, overflowing with talent.

Danny Ings, Divock Origi, Joe Gomez, Alberto Moreno and even Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet have been linked with a move away from Anfield.

“In this moment, the squad would be too big, that’s true. But it’s not that that means for us that we give them for free or something like that, Liverpool is strong enough to keep all these players and then we deal with that.”

While the transfer deadline to buy for Premier League teams is August 9, they are allowed to sell players till the end of the month so there is still time for a raft of departures.

“We are not there to make other teams stronger, that’s not our job,” the German tactician added.

Klopp’s men, among the favourites for the Premier League title, open their 2018/19 campaign with a home clash against West Ham United on August 12.
