Captain of the Copa America 2019 winning team, Brazil, Dani Alves has been named as the best player of the tournament. Notably, Brazil went on to lift the Copa America title after they went on to defeat Peru in the final at Maracana Stadium.
On Monday (IST), Alves led his side to a win on the home soil. With this win, Alves has now become the first footballer to receive as many as 40 trophies.
The right-back started in each of Brazil’s six matches and also went on to score in the 5-0 win that the hosts had registered over Peru in the group stages.
Interestingly, the Best Player of Copa America is not part of any club at the moment. The 34-year-old had announced his departure from Paris Saint-German (PSG) last month and is yet to sign a deal with any other club.
He had taken over the responsibility of leading Brazil from his former PSG teammate Neymar in May. Alves had to take up the role since Neymar was involved in quite a few off-field controversies which including a physical attack on a fan. It is worth noting here that this attack had earned Neymar a three-match ban by the French Football Association.
Apart from Alves winning the Player of the Tournament award, his teammate Alisson was awarded the Golden Glove award for being in phenomenal form throughout the tournament and being the best goalkeeper on the display.
Everton became the player of the match in the coveted finals after scoring a goal, picking a penalty against Peru. He also went on to share the top goal scorer honour with Peru’s Paolo Guerrero as the two scored three goals each.
