South African pacer Dale Steyn was absent from international cricket for 14 months due to a career threatening shoulder injury against Australia in November 2016. The first Test of the three-match Test series against India at Newlands Cape Town was his first match after returning to the competitive cricket.

However, he again suffered an injury during the first Test against India and now has been ruled out from the series, which was confirmed by Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday.

Steyn injured his left heel in the last over before tea on the second day at Newlands. Because of the injury, he is having difficulty in moving his foot.

In the opening Test match Steyn had picked two wickets for 51 runs. The CSA will announce the replacement for Steyn at the conclusion of the match.
