After being the runners up in the Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year Award, Netherland and Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk stated that he could not yet be compared with the Argentine star Lionel Messi. He also meanwhile stated that he was not disappointed as he missed out on winning the coveted award.
While Messi won the award, Van Dijk came second and Portugal superstar forward Cristiano Ronaldo came third. The centre back player stated that there was no way at all he could be compared to Lionel Messi who was brilliant netting 51 goals in all competitions in 2018-19.
“The people who vote made a decision and you have to accept it,” Van Dijk told reporters.
“That’s just the case and as players you can’t compare me and Messi because it’s totally different.
“I’m very proud to be here,” he added.
Virgil van Dijk helped Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League in the previous season while falling a touching distance short of Manchester City in the Premier League. Despite missing out on the top prize, he claimed not to be disappointed.
“Disappointed? You can’t be disappointed,” he said.
“I’m just very happy to be here, to be in the team of the year, after the hard work and the good work we put in last year.
“Today, I unfortunately didn’t win but I’m not disappointed,” he concluded.
Liverpool will now be up against MK Dons in the EFL Cup on Wednesday and will then play Sheffield United in an away game on Saturday.
