Model and reality TV star Kendall Jenner has courted another controversy with her latest Vogue photoshoot. The fashion magazine unveiled a few pictures of the 22-year-old model featuring Jenner with teased hair. Social media users called out the magazine over alleged cultural appropriation.
Kendall could be seen sporting a wig in the photograph, which people think looks like an Afro. The comment section was bombarded with remarks on the ‘afro’, “Stop doing this Vogue, it’s getting ridiculous,” a user wrote. A fair amount of people bashed the magazine for using a Caucasian model sporting an afro and called out for cultural appropriation.
On Monday, Vogue issued a statement to E! News wherein they apologized for the picture. “The image is meant to be an update of the romantic Edwardian/Gibson Girl hair which suits the period feel of the Brock Collection, and also the big hair of the ’60s and the early ’70s, that puffed-out, teased-out look of those eras. We apologize if it came across differently than intended, and we certainly did not mean to offend anyone by it,” the statement read.
A few months back, another supermodel, Gigi Hadid’s cover photo on Vogue Italia, ignited a backlash for ‘dark skin’. However, the 23-year-old model went on to apologise on social media and explained that she understands what “Vogue Italia’s intentions were” but “it was not executed correctly, and the concerns that have been brought up are valid.”
