In an embarrassing incident, food delivery company Zomato has found itself in a major controversy with a video of one of its food delivery men carrying a company delivery bag and consuming food out of its boxed orders surfacing on social media.
The man in the video seems to be wearing a Zomato t-shirt.
As the video went viral, the company said on Monday it would introduce “tamper-proof tapes” to guard against the tampering of food on its way to customers.
The video shared on micro blogging side Twitter by a user showed the delivery man eating some of the food purportedly ordered by a customer, resealing it and putting it back into the delivery bag.
“In our commitment towards mitigating any possibility of tampering with food, Zomato will soon introduce tamper-proof tapes, and other precautionary measures to ensure we safeguard against any chances of tampering of food,” Zomato said in its statement, asserting that the company had a zero tolerance policy for tampering of food.

“We have found that the video was shot in Madurai; the person in the video is a delivery partner on our fleet. We have spoken to him at length – and while we understand that this was a human error in judgement, have taken him off the platform,” the company added.
In a blog post regarding the incident, Zomato thanked and welcomed users for actively highlighting such grievances.
Zomato was heavily trolled as soon the video hit the social media, with many expressing their concerns over the quality of food being delivered to them.
After the incident, the company has said it will educate its delivery fleet of over 1.5 lakh partners to highlight or escalate any such deviations, “while also encouraging our users — the custodians of our platform — to highlight the smallest of anomalies to us”.
