A man, who was allegedly abducted and tortured by unidentified militants in Kulgam district of South Kashmir, succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Srinagar, police said on Thursday.

Two youths — Mehraj Ahmad of Kulgam and Arif Ahmad of Khudwani — were abducted by unidentified militants on Wednesday. They were reportedly taken to an unidentified place and were brutally tortured.

Police spokesman said on Thursday that severely tortured Arif was retrieved and shifted to hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Condition of Mehraj was serious in the hospital.

Suspecting them of being informers of security forces, terrorists kidnapped the two youth and badly tortured them. They were last night found lying in a serious condition near the Moman village from where they were rushed to the Srinagar hospital where Arif succumbed to his injuries.

Both these youth were reportedly working as over-ground workers of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba (LeT) terror outfit and were suspected to have leaked whereabouts of terror commander Abu Qasim who was killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam in October 2015. Following a number of top terrorists having been eliminated in Kulgam district, terrorists have been threatening the residents of the area against passing on information about their presence to security forces.

The Kulgam police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and initiated investigations.

Meanwhile, the number of killed terrorists in the operations at Lidder Panzal in Baramulla district increased to five with recovery of another body on Thursday. Four terrorists were killed yesterday in the ongoing encounter with the Army’s Special Forces.
