The Uttar Pradesh government will set up a commission for a triple test to provide OBC reservation in the state civic polls.

Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, announced this on Tuesday after the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court quashed the state government’s notification issued on 5 December on the OBC quota.

In a statement, the chief minister said that his government will set up a commission in the context of urban local body elections and provide reservation facilities to other backward classes on the basis of a triple test.

“The civic polls will be held only after completing the triple test to provide reservation to the OBCs in the municipal polls,” he stressed.

He said if required, the government will also approach the Supreme Court after considering all the legal aspects regarding the decision of the high court.

As per the triple test, before determining reservation for OBCs in municipal elections, a commission will be constituted, which will assess the nature of backwardness in the bodies.

Thereafter, the Commission will propose reservation of seats for backward classes. In the second phase, the number of OBCs will be tested by the local bodies and in the third phase, verification will be done at the government level.
