Wheelchair-bound ex-DU professor GN Saibaba acquitted in Maoist link case

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday acquitted GN Saibaba, a wheelchair-bound former Delhi University professor, in Maoist link case. Five other accused have also been acquitted by the high court.

Saibaba is paralysed from the waist down since suffering childhood. He was arrested in May 2014 over alleged links to Maoists.

Saibaba was charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for alleged links to Maoist leader Ganapathy. He taught English literature at Ram Lal Anand College of Delhi University.

In 2017, Saibaba and others were convicted by a Nagpur sessions court. The conviction was challenged in the high court, which set aside the sessions court verdict and acquitted the ex-DU professor and five others.

The former professor was earlier acquitted on October 14, 2022 but the Supreme Court set aside that order and asked the high court for fresh hearing in the case.

The Maharashtra government had challenged his acquittal in the Supreme Court.

Pronouncing the judgement today, a bench of justices Vinay Joshi and Valmiki SA Menezes set aside the 2017 verdict, saying the prosecution could not prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.
