Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday chaired a meeting with the officials of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and approved the project to increase the capacity of Yamuna Vihar STP and to lay a pipeline to ensure treated water is disposed of in the Yamuna.
Under this project, the capacity of Yamuna Vihar STP will be increased from 45 MGD to 70 MGD.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Minister gave instructions to upgrade the sewage water with modern technology to treat it better, so that the Biological Oxidation Demand (BOD) level of waste water can be brought up to 10.
On completion of the project, about 6 lakh households in East Delhi will be benefited from this project. Along with this, it will help in reducing the flow of dirty water in the drains of East Delhi.
Sisodia said: “The Delhi government is working in a phased manner to increase the capacity of various water treatment plants in different areas of the national capital and to clean the Yamuna.”
“We have set a target to complete the cleaning of the Yamuna river by the year 2025. Under this project, the capacity of Yamuna Vihar STP will be increased from 45 MGD to 70 MGD so that clean water is disposed of in the Yamuna,” he said.
Emphasising recycling and reuse of treated water, Sisodia said the treated water coming from STP will not only help in cleaning the Yamuna but will also be very useful for other works. This can be used for purposes like horticulture and rejuvenation of Delhi’s lakes, etc. to meet the growing demand for potable water.
A  pipeline will be laid from Yamuna Vihar STP to Yamuna river. Presently there is already an old pipeline, but due to limited capacity, the DJB has planned to lay another pipeline. With the laying of this pipeline, more and more treated water will be disposed of in the Yamuna. This step of the Delhi government will prove to be effective in achieving the target of cleaning the Yamuna by 2025, an official statement said.
During the meeting, Sisodia directed the officials to complete the project within the time limit.
He said, “At present, the capacity of Yamuna Vihar STP is 45 MGD. After increasing the capacity of these STPs, sewage water will not fall in Drain-1 of East Delhi. Due to the reduction in flow in Drain-1, there will be a reduction in wastewater falling into the Shahdara drain. The Shahdara drain is one of the four major drains that release polluted water in the Yamuna.”
“Apart from this, after upgrading the STP with modern technology, the Biological Oxidation Demand (BOD) level of the dirty water can be purified and brought up to 10. After the completion of the project, about 6 lakh people in the area will be benefited,” he said.
