Justice Gaurang Kanth, the former judge at the Delhi High Court was administered the oath of office at a solemn ceremony at the Calcutta High Court on Friday morning. Justice Kanth was transferred from the Delhi High Court, where he served with distinction for over a year.
At a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam, and attended by other judges of the court and members of the Bar, Justice Kanth, 47, affirmed his commitment to the ideals and legacy of the country’s first High Court, and assured constructive cooperation with the Bar to ensure justice reaches the homes of litigants.
Earlier, Justice Kanth was welcomed by Advocate General SN Mookherjee, and by representatives of the Bar Library Club, the High Court Bar Association, and the incorporated Law Society, who spoke of his record as an advocate and a judge.
Born in Patna on August 20, 1975, he completed his high school education at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in Delhi in 1992, and earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Hindu College, University of Delhi, in 1995, and earned his law degree (LL.B.) from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, in 1998. In 2001, he earned his Master of Laws degree from the University of Denver College of Law in Denver, Colorado, the United States.
Justice Kanth was associated with various causes including the protection of stray animals.
