Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed confidence that his visit to Bishkek for the 13-14 June Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit would further strengthen and consolidate India’s cooperation with SCO member countries.

In a statement ahead of his departure for the Kyrgyz capital, he said the summit was expected to discuss the global security situation, multilateral economic cooperation, people-to-people exchanges and topical issues of international and regional importance.

On the sidelines of the Summit, he said he also planned to meet several leaders bilaterally. The government has already confirmed his meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, there was no plan for a bilateral meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who, too, will attend the summit.

Modi said India attached special importance to SCO in promoting multilateral, political, security, economic and people-to-people interaction in the region.

India has actively participated in various SCO dialogue mechanisms since its full membership of SCO two years ago. “We have extended full cooperation to the chairmanship of the Kyrgyz Republic over the past year,” he added.

On the invitation of the Kyrgyz President, Modi said he would also be on an official bilateral visit to the Kyrgyz Republic on 14 June after the conclusion of the SCO Summit.

Apart from discussions on the entire range of bilateral cooperation with Kyrgyz President Jeenbekov, the PM said he would also jointly address the first meeting of India-Kyrgyz Business Forum with the Kyrgyz leader.
