Veteran Bengali actor Basabi Nandi passed away Sunday (22 July) midnight. The 82-year-old had suffered a heart attack, according to family sources.
Nandi had been suffering from heart and old age related ailments for the last one year.
Her last rites were conducted on Monday. The actress is survived by her only son.
Basabi Nandi was one of the most popular actresses of her time. She entered the entertainment world around late 1950s, and had earned accolades both as a stage and a film artiste.
Among her most prominent plays were Karagar (1962), Same-Side (1968/69) and Srimati Bhayankari (1980).
Jamalaye Jibanto Manush (1958) was her first film and one of her best too. She is remembered for her unforgettable performance in ‘Bon Palashir Padabali’ (1973) in which she acted opposite Uttam Kumar.
In 1974, the Bengal Film Journalists Association conferred the Best Supporting Actress Award on Basabi Nandi by for ‘Bon Palashir Padabali’.
Nandi was also an acclaimed playback singer.
