Former captain of Indian women’s basketball team, Prashanti Singh, and former Olympian Rahul Singh have taken up the initiative to open the first toilet for transgenders in Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will get a separate toilet for the community after Mysore, Bhopal and Nagpur.
“After considerable thinking, we have decided to build a toilet for transgenders,” Prashanti Singh told reporters.
On the National Sports Day ie on August 29, the survey for the project will commence.
Rahul Singh said that the proposed site of the toilet will be decided after survey and study so that the maximum number of transgenders can avail this facility.
The Varanasi Sports Federation will cooperate and take an active interest in the project.
The actual construction of these toilets will begin on October 2.
In 2014, the Supreme Court had ordered separate toilets for transgenders. So far, such toilets have been constructed in Mysuru, Bhopal and Nagpur.
Transgender rights see toilets as the focal point for equality. Earlier this year, the centre urged all state governments to allow transgenders to use public toilets meant for both men or women.
