Intelligence inputs suggest members of terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba have infiltrated in Tamil Nadu following which the state was put on high alert.

The reports suggested six members of the terror outfit infiltrated into the state by sea from Sri Lanka and moved to different cities, including Coimbatore. Police says, the group of terrorists comprises one Pakistani national and five from Sri Lanka.

Speaking to media, Chennai Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan confirmed that an intelligence alert has been received regarding six Lashkar terrorists entering Tamil Nadu, adding that storming operations may be carried out to nab the infiltrators.

State police has stepped up security at many public places, including airports, railway stations, bus stands and places of worship across the state. An alert has been issued, especially in coastal districts, to prevent any further possible intrusion, the police said.

Coimbatore City’s Commissioner of Police, Sumeet Saran told reporters, “We got information that six terrorists have come to Tamil Nadu and they are moving towards Coimbatore. Keeping that in view, we have put a general alert. There is no alarming situation. There is no need to worry about anything.”

The police are scanning the Coimbatore railway station with the help of sniffer dogs and also checking all departing trains. Authorities have also appealed to public to inform them about movements of suspicious persons.

The police says, there has been tight patrolling across Coimbatore district and vehicle checks have been intensified in the city and border areas.
