A day after Calcutta High Court's former judge Justice CS Karnan was arrested in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a plea to suspend his sentence.

“Justice Karnan’s six-month jail term will not be suspended,” the top court bench said.

According to reports, Karnan, who was sentenced to six-month imprisonment by the Supreme Court for contempt, was arrested from a guest house in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. Karnan is being brought to Kolkata’s Presidency Jail.

The seven-judge bench of the apex court had on 9 May passed the order sentencing Karnan to jail by holding him guilty of contempt.

Justice Karnan had on 11 May moved the apex court seeking recall of the sentence, but the plea as turned down.

According to reports, the West Bengal Police swung into action after getting a tip off about Karnan’s hiding place.
