The Supreme Court on Friday posted for hearing on February 3 a plea by Aam Aadmi Party’s mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi seeking a time-bound conduct of the election to the post of mayor which has been stalled twice in this month – last being on January 24.

A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Dipankar Datta said it will hear the plea on February 3 after senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi mentioned the matter for an urgent hearing.

Election for Delhi mayor was stalled on January 24 as the House was adjourned indefinitely by the LG-appointed presiding officer following a ruckus by some councillors.

The AAP has been accusing the BJP of running away from holding the election for the post of Mayor.

The Leader of the House Mukesh Goel and mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi approached the apex court on January 26, seeking direction for the time-bound conduct of the mayor’s election.

The AAP won 134 of the 250 wards in the MCD polls held in December last year. The BJP won in 104 wards.

Oberoi, in her plea, has sought directions that the nominated members are not allowed to vote in the mayor’s election.
