The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notices to Delhi’s Lt. Governor Vinai Saxena and pro-term presiding officer Satya Sharma to respond by Monday (February 13) on why the nominated members were being asked to vote in Delhi mayoral elections.
A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha and Justice J B Pardiwala asked this while examining a plea by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi seeking early mayoral elections for the civic body that were postponed thrice in the past two months.
Senior advocate A M Singhvi pointed out that the session of the House was called three times but no election for the mayor was held.
“We have several objections including that the pro- term presiding officer of the MCD is insisting on holding elections for mayor, deputy mayor and members of standing committee all at once. This is contrary to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act,” Singhvi told the bench.
