RIP Sushma Swaraj | Delhi govt declares 2-day state mourning for its 1st woman CM

The Delhi government on Wednesday announced a two-day state mourning on the untimely demise of the city’s first woman Chief Minister Sushma Swaraj.

“Sushmaji was former CM of Delhi. Delhi will pay its respects by observing state mourning for two days,” tweeted CM Arvind Kejriwal announcing the same.

Kejriwal also said India has lost a great leader and Swaraj was “a very warm and remarkable person”.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also said the government will observe a two-day state mourning as a mark of respect in her memory.

There will be no cultural events during this period in the state. However, all other government business and programmes, including the Anganwadi programme at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, will continue as scheduled.

The Haryana government also declared that it will observe a two-day state mourning in honour of the senior BJP leader.

Former External Affairs Minister and senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj passed away late on Tuesday night after suffering a cardiac arrest. She was 67 years old.

Swaraj was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in a critical condition today evening. She was brought to AIIMS at 10:15 pm by her family and was straight away taken to the emergency ward, soon after which she died.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and politicians cutting across party lines paid tributes to the departed soul. Bollywood celebrities and the sports fraternity condoled the death of the remarkable leader.

Her mortal remains were taken from AIIMS to her Delhi residence where they will be kept till 12 pm today for people to pay last respects. Around 12 pm, her mortal remains will be brought to the BJP headquarters. At 3 pm she will be taken to Lodhi road crematorium where her last rites will be performed with full state honours.
