Lakshmi Bai, better known as Jhansi ki Rani, was the queen of the princely state of Jhansi, now part of Uttar Pradesh.
She was one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and became a symbol of resistance to the British Raj for Indian nationalists.
Born on 19th November 1828, Rani Laxmibai died 160 years ago on this day while fighting the British forces.
A number of patriotic songs have been written about the Rani. The most famous composition about Rani Lakshmi Bai is the Hindi poem “Jhansi ki Rani” written by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan.
A women’s unit of the Indian National Army was named the Rani of Jhansi Regiment. Many educational institutions have been named after her as well.
