Superstar Rajinikath, who is now venturing into politics, took to Twitter on Friday, 16 February, to react to the Supreme Court judgment on the Cauvery water distribution.

The 67-year-old Tamil actor, who is fondly addressed as ‘Thalaivar’ (leader in Tamil), demanded that the Tamil Nadu government must take action against the judgment which gives Karnataka a greater share of the water.

“The final verdict of the Supreme Court in Cauvery Water Distribution is very disappointing as it affects the livelihood of Tamil Nadu farmers. The Tamil Nadu government should take action to file a review petition,” Rajinikanth wrote in Tamil on his official Twitter handle.

Reducing Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water, a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud increased the share of Karnataka by 14.7 thousand million cubic feet (TMC).

Tamil Nadu will now get a reduced 177.25 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water of the river which originates in Talakaveri, Kodagu in Karnataka and empties into the Bay of Bengal at Poompuhar in Tamil Nadu.

The court, which had reserved its verdict on 20 September 2017, ruled that the global status of Bengaluru, Karnataka’s capital city, warranted the need of more water.

The verdict, which appears to have put an end to the decades old dispute, will be valid for 15 years.
