Congress president Rahul Gandhi embarked on a two-day tour of Gwalior-Chambal region in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh with a temple visit in Datia district.

The 48-year-old Congress chief, who is scheduled to address three rallies in the region, offered prayers at the Pitambara Peeth temple in Gwalior on Monday.

Madhya Pradesh Congress president Kamal Nath and party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia accompanied Gandhi to the temple.

In a tweet, the party said that Gandhi prayed according to the customs and traditions of the temple.

The Congress president will also hold a roadshow in the region.

Datia is an ancient town in north central Madhya Pradesh. Many believe that the famous Shaktipitha temple dates back to the Mahabharata era.

The district is part of the Bhind Lok Sabha constituency, which is represented in Parliament by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
