The University of Hyderabad, on Saturday, suspended a faculty member for alleged sexual assault on a foreign student after he was arrested by the Cyberabad Police following a complaint lodged at the Gacchibowli police station on 2 December.
Protests had erupted in the university as students alleged that the administration was dilly dallying over taking action against the accused faculty member, Ravi Ranjan. The sexagenarian professor with the department of Hindi at the School of Humanities was charged with rape following the complaint by the 23-year-old Thai student of the same department.
It’s said he had invited the student to his residence on the pretext of teaching her, offered her alcohol and then tried to rape her. It has also been alleged that he beat her up when she tried to resist him. The professor, later, dropped her at the campus.
The student confided her classmates about her ordeal with the help of a translation app. The classmate then helped her lodge a complaint with the police.
“The university condemns the incident that occurred involving Prof. Ravi Ranjan, Department of Hindi and a student on December 02, 2022 … Prof. Ravi Ranjan is placed under suspension with immediate effect,” reads a statement issued by the registrar of the Central University.
