Amid talks of Opposition unity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi.
Janata Dal (United) President Lalan Singh was also present at the meeting held at the Congress chief’s residence.
The Bihar chief minister, who arrived in the national capital last evening, is also expected to meet several other leaders to give an impetus to the efforts being made by the Opposition to put up a united front against the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls.
Rahul, who has been trying to bring the Opposition under one umbrella immediately, took to Twitter to say; ”In this ideological battle, one historic step has been taken to unite the Opposition. We are standing together, we will fight together for India.”
Kharge also tweeted, ” Rahul Gandhi ji and I had a meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav and other leaders. We reiterated our resolve to jointly raise the voice of the people and give a new direction to the nation.”
Nitish Kumar also stated; “We will try to unite as many parties as possible and work together in the future.”
Tejashwi Yadav was already in Delhi as he appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday for questioning in a money-laundering case linked to the alleged land-for-jobs scam. Today’s meeting came a day after Nitish Kumar met RJD supremo Lalu Prasad in Delhi.
During their meeting, Yadav and Kumar discussed the current political situation and steps to strengthen the Opposition unity. Nitish Kumar said he had been in touch over the phone with Lalu Prasad, who had undergone a kidney transplant recently, about his health and it was important to meet him physically.
