The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday appointed Sanjay Mukherjee as the new DGP of West Bengal.
The latest development came a day after the poll panel removed Rajeev Kumar from the post.
“I am directed to refer to Memo dated 18th March, 2024, on the subject cited and to state that the Commission has approved the name of Sanjay Mukherjee, IPS (1989) for the post of Director General and Inspector General of Police, West Bengal,” said the letter issued by Commission’s Secretary Rakesh Kumar to Chief Secretary of West Bengal.
The poll panel’s official also asked the Chief Secretary to ensure immediate compliance and confirm the same by 05:00 pm on Tuesday.
Kumar on Monday in a letter to the Chief Secretary, wrote, “I am directed to state that after reviewing the poll preparedness, the Commission has given following directions– Rajeev Kumar, IPS, Director General and Inspector General of Police, West Bengal be shifted to a non-election related post with immediate effect. The charge of Rajeev Kumar. IPS be given to the next senior officer in the Police Headquarters till posting of new Director General & Inspector General of Police, West Bengal.”
A panel of three eligible officers for posting of Director General & Inspector General of Police, West Bengal be sent to Commission latest by 5.00 pm, it said.
Notably on Monday, the poll panel issued orders for the removal of home secretaries in six states– Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
