Two days after a Captain-rank officer of the Indian Army attained martyrdom in a ceasefire violation along the LoC, Pakistan again resorted to heavy shelling in Rajouri.

Pakistani troops opened fire on the Line of Control (LoC) at Tarkundi and Manjakote. Indian forces retaliated in equal measure to the unprovoked shelling and firing from the Pakistani side.

Both Tarkundi and Manjakote are located in Bhimber Gali sector. Pakistani forces used small arms, automatics and mortars to target defence and civilian facilities.

Reports state that heavy firing exchanges are going on between the two sides.

On Sunday, Pakistan Army had targeted an Indian Army post in the same sector, killing four soldiers including Captain Kapil Kundu.

Captain Kundu was just six days short of his 23rd birthday. Reports say that Pakistan Army fired five or six anti-tank guided missiles, one of which hit the bunker in which the soldiers were positioned.

The three others who attained martyrdom are riflemen Ramavatar, 28, Subham Singh, 22, and Havilder Roshan Lal, 42.

Pakistan committed over 200 ceasefire violations in January 2018 alone.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said on Monday that in the past three years, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire agreement with India 834 times on the international border and the LoC, killing 97 persons and injuring 383 others.

All the schools within five km of the LoC in Rajouri district have been ordered to remain closed for three days due to the ceasefire violations.

Early today, a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, Abu Hanzula alias Naveed, escaped the police net from the Maharaja Hari Singh hospital in Srinagar after snatching a rifle and killing two cops. He was reportedly helped by two more terrorists.
