Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday and took stock of the floods that have ravaged parts of the northeastern state. The PM assured all assistance from the Centre and prayed for the safety of all affected.

“Spoke to Nagaland CM @Neiphiu_Rio and took stock of the situation in the wake of floods in parts of the state. Assured all possible support to the state in the rescue & relief operations. We stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Nagaland and pray for everyone’s wellbeing,” the PM said.

Thanking the PM for his concern, Rio said that his words of support mean “a lot for the people of Nagaland”.

“I thank Hon’ble Prime Minister @narendramodi ji for his call and words of support. It means a lot for the people of Nagaland,” he said.

Rio, the chief of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) – an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state government, said, “I am confident that with the support of Government of India, we will overcome the challenging situation caused due to heavy rains and landslides.”

Earlier on 30 August, Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Rio and assured him that the NDRF will be sent for rescue and relief operations.

The Home Minister spoke to the Chief Minister a day after he sought the Centre’s help following incessant rain in the state since July that has caused floods and landslides in several areas claiming at least 12 lives and rendering thousands homeless.

“Nagaland needs your help. Incessant rain has caused floods and landslides in several parts of the state and has affected many,” Rio tweeted on Wednesday.

Following the interaction between the two, Rajnath Singh tweeted: “Spoke to Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio regarding the situation arising due to floods and landslides in several places of the state. The NDRF teams are being rushed to the state by the MHA to carry out rescue and relief operations.”

A Home Ministry official said that over half a dozen teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), comprising 45 personnel each, are being sent to the affected areas in Nagaland.
