Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda on Wednesday inaugurated a state-of-the-art modern library and information centre at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Health Institute in Tezpur Wednesday.

The facility, developed at a cost of Rs 12 crore, aims to enhance academic and research infrastructure at the institute.

The health institution, which specializes in mental health, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1876 as a “Lunatic Asylum” during the British era.

Renamed in 1989 after Bharat Ratna awardee Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, it has undergone significant transformations.

In 1999, the North Eastern Council brought the institute under its jurisdiction, and by 2010, it had introduced advanced medical courses such as MD in mental health, DNB, and MSc in Nursing.

Following the inauguration, the Union Minister attended meeting of Board of Governors at the institute.

JP Nadda, along with Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Health Minister Ashok Singhal, also visited the institute’s medical facilities.

Nadda reached Guwahati on Tuesday late at night and was supposed to reach Tezpur by chopper in the morning. However, due to inclement weather, he travelled by road from Guwahati, delaying his arrival in the programme, an official said.

Nadda’s last programme will be a visit to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Guwahati, located in Kamrup district. There he will review various ongoing developmental works in the presence of senior officials, before departing from Guwahati.
