The Supreme Court on Thursday observed that the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape accused Brajesh Thakur should be moved to a jail outside Bihar while referring to the “scary” details of the crime.

The court also issued show cause notice to Thakur seeking his reply as to why he should not be shifted out of jail in Bihar and taken to a jail in some other state.

The apex court while perusing the status report filed by the CBI on the investigation in the case said, it reveals “shocking, horrible and scary” details of how the crime was committed.

The court further said that Brajesh Thakur, the main accused in the case appeared to be a very influential person and was obstructing the investigation. It also pulled up the Bihar government for not giving the case a proper direction.

The Supreme Court also asked the state government and the CBI to file a response as to why Chandra Shekhar Verma, husband of former Bihar minister Manju Verma, has not been arrested yet.

Social Welfare Minister Manju Verma had to resign after it became known that her husband was in close touch with Thakur.

The alleged sexual exploitation of 34 girls living in the Muzaffarpur shelter home came to light when a Mumbai-based social science institute, which had conducted an audit of the state-funded establishment run by an NGO, submitted its report.

An FIR was subsequently registered by the Bihar social welfare department and 10 persons, including prime accused Brajesh Thakur whose NGO ran the shelter home, were arrested.

The Supreme Court had in September vacated the Patna High Court’s 23 August order banning the media from reporting on the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case and decided to monitor the investigation.
