President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday condoled the loss of lives in the Mumbai stampede that has left 22 people dead and expressed his anguish over the tragedy.

“Anguished by the loss of lives in the stampede in Mumbai. Condolences to the bereaved families; prayers with injured,” Kovind tweeted.

At least 22 people lost their lives in a stampede that occurred on a foot-over bridge at Parel railway station in Mumbai, police said adding that over 30 people have been left injured.

The bridge connects Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban stations, police added.

All the injured have been rushed to nearby KEM hospital and rescue operations are underway.

The cause of the stampede on the narrow footover bridge was not known, but eyewitnesses claimed that a sudden rumour of a suspected electrical short-circuit sparked off a panic.
