A mother jumped into the Bhagirathi river to rescue her drowning son and had to be rescued by some local fish vendors in Katwa in East Burdwan. The son is still missing and presumed dead. Bijon Kundu (28) of Bhantakul village in Bhatar PS area was a computer trainer by profession. He accompanied his mother and aunt to the Bhagirathi ghat of Katwa town. Bijon’s mother and aunt already had taken the ritual bath when the youth jumped into the river, the police said.
The mother saw that her son was being overcome by the river current and immediately jumped in in a bid to to rescue her son but couldn’t reach him. The woman though was rescued but the fishermen and disaster management divers were unable to trace the son till this evening. Bhagirathi ghat is reputed to be located at the spot where Shri Nimai Chaitanya had taken a holy dip for renunciation and changed his name under his Guru Jrshav Bharati in the 15th century.
This is the reason why people crowd the ghat throughout the year.
