Senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil on Thursday said the Narendra Modi-led government’s complicated Goods and Services Tax (GST) has put an unbearable burden on the poor and common people.
Addressing a press conference at Delhi Congress office here, he asserted that the Congress wanted a simplified GST, but the Modi government imposed a complicated nine-tax slab GST to create “tax terrorism” to loot the poor and the middle class and pass on the benefits of the loot to the 10 per cent rich friends of the BJP.
“The Modi government has put an unbearable burden on the poor, common people, salaried, working class, farmers, traders, small shopkeepers, and even those travelling by autos. Modi’s GST has created a wide gap between the haves and have-nots. Rahul Gandhi had rightly termed GST as ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’, as it is a betrayal on the people,” he said.
The Congress MP claimed that the two-third of GST comes from the common people, while the 10 per cent super rich contributed only three per cent GST in the past 10 years. The GST rules apply only to the poor and the common people, as those with links to the BJP get away, he alleged.
“In 2023-24, the Government was cheated of Rs two lakh crore GST by the powerful, and Rs 35,000 crore in input credit while cotton farmers are made to pay advance GST,” Gohil added.
