President Droupadi Murmu said on Wednesday that in the last 10 years, India has seen the completion of many such works in the national interest for which the people of the country were waiting for decades.

”The achievements that we see today are the extension of the practices of the last 10 years. We have heard the slogan of ‘Garibi Hatao’ since our childhood. Today, for the first time in our lives, we see poverty being alleviated on a large scale,” she said in her address to the joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as the Budget Session commenced here.

During her speech to mark the beginning of the Budget Session, also the last session of the 17th Lok Sabha, President Murmu highlighted all the historic laws passed by Parliament.

The President said that the new Parliament building has the fragrance of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshth Bharat’.

“This is my first address in the new Parliament building. This grand building was built at the beginning of the Amrit Kaal. This has the fragrance of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshth Bharat’…This also has the resolve to honour democratic and parliamentary traditions. Besides this, it also has the resolve to build new traditions of the new India of the 21st century. I am confident that there will be meaningful conversation on policies in this new building,” she said.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the media ahead of the Budget Session and expressed confidence that a full fledged budget will be presented after the formation of the new government.

“May it (Budget session) be a productive one,” Modi told reporters, adding Opposition MPs who are habitual of creating disruptions in the House, must introspect.
